Why am I seeing disparity between GPU and CPU modes?

Because of discrepancies between the rendering pipeline, there are certain differences that can surface when switching between CPU and GPU.

The major cases this disparity has been found are when:

  • Working with Shadowlets in 32bpc comps, in which case switching to 16bpc resolves the issue.
  • Shadowlets on particles with blend mode set to Add, Normal Add over Life or Normal Screen over Life may show a disparity between CPU and GPU Direct. The difference becomes less apparent when working with 16 bpc and 32bpc.
  • Star particles with a small particle size (4 or below) may not be as crisp in GPU Streaming. To workaround this, work in CPU or GPU Direct modes.
