Problem:
The Cinema 4D Command Line renderer is using a Cinema 4D GUI license instead of a Command-Line license.
Solution:
-
- The most common reason is that you do not have a command line license. In this case, you would need to contact our sales team to purchase command line licenses because, without a command line license, the command line renderer will default to using a GUI license – which could be a Cinema 4D stand-alone or Maxon One license.

- If you have command line licenses, another reason could be that you've manually moved the Cinema 4D GUI preferences to the Cinema 4D Command Line preferences folder which contains *License files that dictate which license is used. This issue is rare and has primarily been observed with RLM licenses but may not be limited to RLM. The solution is to delete the license files.

*Understanding the License Files:
- Inside the Command Line preference folder are two key files that dictate which license and license method are being used.
- licensetype.prf: This file determines the license method (Maxon App, Maxon Account, RLM, Maxon License Server).
- JSON file: This file tells the Maxon License Server or RLM server which license to assign to the command line renderer. If you've copied the Cinema 4D GUI preference folder's contents to the Command Line preference folder, the JSON file may incorrectly instruct the server to assign a GUI license. If you use RLM it will rlm.json, if you are using the Maxon License Server it will be server.json
Fix:
- Delete the licensetype.prf and the JSON file in the **Command Line preference folder.
- Re-license the command line renderer. For detailed instructions on how to license the command line renderer, please refer to the following FAQ: How do I license the Command line renderer?
**Location of the Command Line preference folder:
Windows: Users > USERNAME > AppData > Roaming > MAXON > Maxon Cinema 4D 20**_********_x
Mac: Users > USERNAME > Library > Preferences > MAXON > Maxon Cinema 4D 20**_********_x
To prevent confusion, the folders for Team Render, Cineware, c4dpy, and Command Line are Cinema 4D 20**_********_$ where _$ is one of the labels below (note that the Cinema 4D folder has no label):
- Cinema 4D: no label
- Team Render Client: _c
- Team Render Server: _s
- Cineware: _w
- Command Line _x
- c4dpy _p
