One of the most common questions we receive is:
"Can I use my Team Render licenses to set up a render farm?"
The answer depends on the type of render farm you want to build:
-
Using Third-Party Software (e.g., Deadline, Qube):
No. Team Render licenses cannot be used with third-party render management software. -
Using within the Cinema 4D Ecosystem (Cineam 4D & Team Render Server)
Yes. You can use your included Team Render licenses to build a fully functional render farm to use with Cineam 4D or Team Render Server.
This article explains the differences and outlines the specific license requirements for each workflow.
Team Render Licenses Explained
Every Cinema 4D and Maxon One license includes:
- 5x Team Render Client licenses
- 1x Team Render Server license
These licenses are specifically engineered to work exclusively within the Cineam 4D ecosystem.
Because Team Render utilizes a proprietary communication protocol optimized for decentralized asset distribution, its licenses cannot be recognized or used by third-party render farm management software.
- Works With: Cinema 4D & Team Render Server.
- Does NOT Work With: AWS Thinkbox Deadline, Qube, Royal Render, OpenCue, or any other third-party manager.
What Do I Need for Third-Party Farms?
If your studio pipeline relies on third-party render management software to handle complex scheduling and job distribution, you will need to use the Commandline Renderer.
The Commandline Renderer operates differently from Team Render and requires its own dedicated license type:
- Commandline Render License: This is a separate "headless" license designed specifically for farm nodes. It allows the Cinema 4D engine to run via the command line without loading the graphical user interface (GUI).
Note:
Commandline Render licenses are typically sold separately. However, Maxon Teams licenses (Cinema 4D or Maxon One) include 2 Commandline Render licenses per seat.
Summary: Which License Do I Need?
| I want to use... | License Required | Included with C4D? |
|---|---|---|
| Team Render |
Team Render Client License *Team Render Server (optional) |
Yes • Team Render Client (5 included) • Team Render Server (1 included) Per 1x Cineam 4D license |
| Deadline / Qube / Royal Render | Commandline Render License |
Depends on License: • Teams: Yes (2 included) • Individual: No (Sold separately) |
*Team Render Server is optional because you can start a Team Render job directly in Cinema 4D (e.g., Team Render to Picture Viewer)
Next Steps
If you’re ready to set up your farm and plan to use a third-party render-farm manager, you’ll need to purchase Command Line licenses. To do that, please contact your Maxon Account Manager or reach out to Sales using the contact form >HERE<
