Why does Cinema 4D not open, crash, show a blank viewport, or perform poorly on laptops with integrated and dedicated graphics?

Problem: On laptops with both integrated and dedicated graphics, Cinema 4D may crash on launch or display a blank or black viewport because the dedicated NVIDIA or AMD GPU is not being prioritized correctly. This can also affect performance in more complex scenes.

Solution: Ensuring Cinema 4D is set to use the dedicated NVIDIA or AMD GPU, either through Windows Graphics Settings or your laptop's graphics management software, typically resolves this issue. Select the option below that applies to your device.

Click an option below to expand and view the instructions.

+Windows Graphics Settings

Windows allows you to specify which GPU individual applications should use. Setting Cinema 4D to High performance directs it to use the dedicated NVIDIA or AMD GPU regardless of the system's default graphics mode.

Why isn't Cinema 4D using the correct or most powerful graphics card (GPU) in my Windows 10 or 11 system?

+HP laptops: Omen Gaming Hub

Some HP laptops include a dedicated graphics switching feature in OMEN Gaming Hub that controls whether the system runs in Hybrid or Discrete graphics mode at a system level. Switching to Discrete mode forces all applications to use the dedicated NVIDIA or AMD GPU and is the recommended approach for HP OMEN users experiencing this issue.

  1. Close Cinema 4D.
  2. Open OMEN Gaming Hub.
  3. Navigate to Graphics Switcher.
  4. Change the graphics mode from Hybrid to Discrete.
  5. Apply the change and restart the laptop.
  6. Reopen Cinema 4D and test again.
Note

Discrete mode is intended for higher graphics performance, while Hybrid mode is designed to balance performance and battery life. On models that support this option, switching to Discrete mode can improve Cinema 4D performance and GPU detection behavior.
