Why can't my AI app connect to the Cinema 4D MCP server?

Problem: You connected an AI app, such as the Claude desktop app or the ChatGPT/Codex desktop app, to Cinema 4D through the built-in MCP server, but the app does not offer any Cinema 4D tools. It may say it cannot reach Cinema 4D, report that its connection was refused, or simply act as if Cinema 4D is not there.

Solution In most cases the AI app was started before Cinema 4D, or it never fully closed and is still running in the background from an earlier session. Quitting the app completely, starting Cinema 4D with the MCP server turned on, and then starting the app again fixes it. If that does not help, the error message in the AI app and the app's status in the Cinema 4D preferences will point you to the cause.

This article walks through the checks in the order we recommend, starting with the most common cause.

Where to find the MCP settings

All the settings mentioned in this article are on one page in the Cinema 4D preferences:

  1. Open Edit > Preferences. On macOS, you can also use Cinema 4D > Preferences.
  2. The Preferences window opens with a list of categories in the column on the left. Click MCP, which is the last item at the bottom of that list.
  3. The MCP page opens on the right. It is split into sections, each with a heading in capital letters: SERVER, CLIENTS, SECURITY, TOOLSET, REMOTE ACCESS and LOGGING.

Click each section below to expand it and see the steps. Work through them in order, starting from the top.

+1. Start Cinema 4D before the AI app

This is the most common reason the Cinema 4D tools don't show up.

The MCP server runs inside Cinema 4D, so it only exists while Cinema 4D is open. When your AI app starts, it waits about 20 seconds for Cinema 4D. If Cinema 4D is not running by then, the app gives up and does not try again on its own. Once a connection has worked, the app does reconnect automatically if you quit and restart Cinema 4D later.

This is easy to miss, because many AI apps start when you log in and keep running in the background after you close their window. The app you think you are opening may have been running for hours.

Follow these steps in this order:

  1. Quit the AI app completely. Closing its window is not enough, because many apps keep running in the background.
    • Windows: right-click the app's icon in the system tray (the bottom right of the taskbar) and choose Quit. Then open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and end any processes with the app's name, for example Claude, that are still running.
    • macOS: click the app's icon in the menu bar at the top of the screen and choose Quit, or press Cmd+Q while the app is in front. Then open Activity Monitor and quit any processes with the app's name that are still running.
  2. Start Cinema 4D and make sure the MCP server is turned on. The server is off by default after installation. On the MCP page in the preferences, look at the SERVER section and make sure Allow MCP Server is checked. You can also open the Commander (Shift+C), type Start MCP Server and run it.
  3. Start the AI app.
+2. Check the error message in the AI app

Depending on the app, it may show an error message that points to the cause:

  • "cannot reach the Cinema 4D MCP server": Cinema 4D is not running, Allow MCP Server is turned off, or the Port in the SERVER section was changed after the app was set up. If you changed the Port, either change it back, or click Update Selected Client in the CLIENTS section and then restart the app.
  • "the Cinema 4D MCP server rejected this token (401)": the token was changed with Regenerate Token after the app was set up. Quit the app completely and start it again. If it is still refused, click Update Selected Client in the CLIENTS section, then restart the app again.
+3. Check the app's status in Cinema 4D

On the MCP page, look at the CLIENTS section and click the MCP Client drop-down list. Each AI app shows its status in brackets after its name:

  • (configured): Cinema 4D has set up this app and nothing has changed since.
  • (not set up): Cinema 4D has not set up this app yet.
  • (needs updating): something changed since the app was set up, for example the token was regenerated, or Cinema 4D was updated or reinstalled.
  • (not installed): Cinema 4D cannot find this app on your computer. Install the app and start it once, then try again.

For "not set up" or "needs updating", select the app in the list, click Update Selected Client, then quit the app completely and start it again as described in section 1.

Note: "nothing to change" is fine If Update Selected Client tells you the app "is already configured for this endpoint - nothing to change", the setup is fine, even if the list said "(needs updating)". Some apps read the token directly from Cinema 4D each time they start, so they do not need updating after a token change. Quit the app completely and start it again.

The status is checked when the Preferences window opens. If you just changed a setting, close the Preferences window and open it again to see the current status.

Keep your token private

Important: Treat the token like a password Cinema 4D uses a token, which works like a password, to make sure only the apps you set up can connect. You can see it as Auth Token in the SERVER section. Anyone who has it, and can reach your computer over a network, could control Cinema 4D. If Python is allowed in the SECURITY section, that includes running scripts that can access your files. Leave Show Token unchecked, especially before you take a screenshot of the MCP preferences to share with someone. If you think the token has been seen by someone else, click Regenerate Token, then restart your AI app as described in section 1.

Still not working?

If you have worked through everything above and your AI app still does not offer the Cinema 4D tools, send us your logs so we can see what is happening. The Maxon Support Tool gathers everything we need automatically, so there is no need to hunt for log files yourself.

Here's how to gather and send them: How to use the Maxon Support Tool to gather logs for Maxon Technical Support.

If you are still experiencing issues after following these steps, please submit a support ticket, and our team will be happy to assist you further.
