Why does Cinema 4D S26 and newer crash when I run in Rosetta on Apple Silicon?

The short version:
Cinema 4D S26 and newer use the AVX instruction set, and cannot run in Rosetta emulation mode on Apple Silicon.

The long version:

Rosetta 2, the translation layer used to run Intel-based applications on Apple Silicon, supports translating x86_64 instructions. However, it does not support some newer instruction sets such as AVX, AVX2, and AVX512. It only supports up to the SSE instruction set. Since Cinema 4D S26 and newer use the AVX instruction set, they cannot run in Rosetta emulation mode on Apple Silicon.

Important notes:

  • For those needing Cinema 4D to run in Rosetta for the Substance pipeline, Apple Silicon support has been added to Cinema 4D 2023 and newer.
  • We've added support for Substances in Nodes materials with a new Substance node in C4D 2024.2. Substances can be added via drag-and-drop in the material manager or the Nodes editor.
