These are the two reasons Primatte Controls might not operate when in use:
- The Primatte effect needs to be selected/highlighted in the Effect Controls window prior to using Primatte's effect controls.
- If using After Effects, the Layer Controls need to be visible, which are found under View > Show Layer Controls.
Both of these requirements stem from limitations in how third party software is able to sample frame data from the host's viewport:
- Selecting the effect lets Primatte know to feed the pixel data from where the mouse going to sample, and also ensures other effects that might want to sample frame data aren't stepping on each other's toes.
- Layer Controls need to be visible to enable the Primatte tools that themselves have Layer Controls built into them (e.g. the sampling box drawn over the frame when using the rectangle sample mode).
