Windows: BSOD Crash When Launching ZBrush

If your computer crashes with a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) immediately after launching ZBrush, the issue is almost always related to a system-level hardware or driver problem rather than ZBrush itself.

ZBrush operates in user space and cannot directly cause a BSOD. A Blue Screen indicates that Windows has encountered a critical kernel-level fault, typically related to:

• Outdated or unstable motherboard BIOS
• Outdated chipset drivers
• GPU drivers
• Faulty or unstable RAM
• Overclocking instability
• Corrupted system drivers

Motherboard BIOS

Motherboards receive BIOS or UEFI firmware updates from the manufacturer. These updates can resolve hardware compatibility issues, CPU microcode updates, memory stability problems, and other low-level conflicts that may be triggered when launching demanding software.

If your BIOS is significantly out of date, updating it may resolve the issue.

Because BIOS update procedures vary by manufacturer and model, we cannot provide specific flashing instructions. Please visit your motherboard manufacturer's official support page and follow their documented update process carefully.

Important
Incorrect BIOS flashing can render a motherboard unusable. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions exactly.

Drivers

In addition to BIOS updates, you should also verify that the following drivers are current:

• Chipset drivers
• GPU drivers (download directly from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel)
• Network drivers
• USB controller drivers
• Storage controller drivers

These are typically available from your motherboard manufacturer’s support page or directly from the component manufacturer.

Additional Checks

• Remove any CPU, RAM, or GPU overclocking.
• Run a memory test to check for faulty RAM.
• Ensure Windows is fully updated.
• Check the BSOD error code for clues about the failing driver or component.

If the system continues to crash after updating BIOS and drivers, the issue is likely hardware instability rather than a ZBrush-specific problem.
