How do I add Team Render machines manually in Cinema 4D and Team Render Client

This article walks through adding Team Render machines by hand, both in Cinema 4D and in Team Render Server.

What you need from each machine:

+The address, the port, and the Security Token

Three things, from every machine you want to render on.

1. The IP address or hostname

The Team Render Client console prints the hostname, IP address, and port as soon as it starts up.

Another way to find the IP Address:

+Find the IP address on Windows
  1. Click Start, type cmd, and open Command Prompt.
  2. Type ipconfig and press Enter.
  3. Find the line labeled IPv4 Address. That number is the one you want.
+Find the IP address on macOS
  1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
  2. Click Network in the sidebar.
  3. Click whichever connection you are using, Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  4. The IP address is listed under Details.

2. The port number

Each program listens on its own port. Mixing these up is the most common reason a machine never connects.

What is running on that machine Default port What you type
Team Render Client 5401 192.168.1.12:5401
Cinema 4D 5400 192.168.1.12:5400

A hostname works just as well, in the same format: render-node-04:5401.

Tip: Give your render machines a fixed address Most networks hand out IP addresses on their own, so a machine's address can change without warning and quietly break the entry you typed. A static IP address or a DHCP reservation for each render machine avoids that, and so does using hostnames instead.

3. The Security Token

Find it in the Team Render preferences on the render machine. In the Team Render Client that is File > Preferences. In full Cinema 4D it is Edit > Preferences > Renderer > Team Render.

Team Render Client default token is 12345 Every Team Render Client ships with the Security Token 12345. If nobody has changed it, that is what you type. If you want your own token, set it before you start adding machines. Changing it later means verifying that machine again.

Adding the machines:

Open whichever one you are using.

+Adding a machine in Cinema 4D

Do this on the host, the machine you are working on and sending the render from.

  1. Open the Render menu and choose Team Render Machines...

  2. In the window that opens, go to Machine > Add Machine... Double-clicking any empty space in the list does the same thing.

  3. Type the address, a colon, then the port number. Click OK.

  4. Type the Security Token when the next window asks for it, then click OK.

  5. Repeat for the rest of your machines.
+Adding a machine in Team Render Server
Team Render Server never finds machines on its own Cinema 4D can search the network for render machines. Team Render Server cannot, and there is no setting to switch on. Typing in the address and port is the only way to get machines into its list.
  1. Go to Machine > Add Machine... You can also double-click any empty space in the left column, or use the + icon at the top left:

  2. Type the address, a colon, then the port number, so something like 192.168.1.12:5401. Click OK:

  3. Type that machine's Security Token and press Enter. The machine drops into the list:

  4. Repeat for the rest of your machines.
+Pro tip: Adding a lot of machines? Back up the list

If you've added a lot of machines, it's a good idea to back that up. Both Cinema 4D and Team Render Server have two more commands in the Machine menu that take care of this.

  • Save Machines... writes the whole list out to a text file, Security Tokens included. Worth doing any time the list changes.
  • Load Machines... reads that text file back in. As long as nobody changed the tokens, every machine reconnects straight away.
