How do I turn off Team Render auto-discovery and add machines manually

Team Render finds machines on its own by announcing them on the local network. If that announcement is blocked or unreliable, switch it off and add each machine by hand instead. This article covers both halves: turning discovery off and then adding them manually on the host.

Before you start Once discovery is off, your Team Render Machines list stays empty until you add every machine by hand. Collect each machine's IP address and Security Token first.

Step 1: Turn off both announce options

Do this on every machine. Both options have to be off, because they are separate mechanisms. Leaving one on means the machine is still announcing itself.

+Cinema 4D
  1. Go to Render > Team Render Machines.
  2. In the window that opens, choose Machine > Preferences.
  3. Uncheck Announce Service via Bonjour.
  4. Uncheck Announce Service to Local Network.
  5. Note the Security Token on the same page.
  6. Close Preferences.
+Team Render Client and Team Render Server
  1. Go to File > Preferences.
  2. Uncheck Announce Service via Bonjour.
  3. Uncheck Announce Service to Local Network.
  4. On a Team Render Client, note the Security Token on the same page.
  5. Close Preferences.
Security Token Team Render Clients start out with the token 12345. If nobody has changed it, that is what you will enter. If you want your own token, set it now rather than later, or you will have to re-verify every machine.

Step 2: Find each machine's IP address

  • Windows: open Command Prompt, run ipconfig, and read the value next to IPv4 Address.
  • macOS: open System Settings > Network.

Step 3: Add each machine on the host

The host is the machine that sends the jobs out, either Cinema 4D or Team Render Server.

  1. Open the machines list. In Cinema 4D that is Render > Team Render Machines. In Team Render Server it is already the main view.
  2. Choose Machine > Add Machine. In Team Render Server you can also click the + button above the view menu tab.
  3. Type the address and port separated by a colon, using the table below.
  4. Enter the Security Token when prompted. The entry turns green once it verifies.
  5. Repeat for every machine.

Team Render Client 5401 192.168.1.12:5401

A hostname works in place of an IP address, in the same format: render-node-04:5401.

Keep manual entries from going stale Give each render machine a static IP address or a DHCP reservation on your router. Otherwise the address changes and the entry stops working. If one does go stale, double-click it in the machines list and type the new address.
Adding a lot of machines, or backing the list up You can import a whole farm from a text file instead of adding machines one at a time, and you can export the finished list so a preferences reset does not cost you the work. Both are covered in How do I save and restore my Team Render machines list?

Turning auto-discovery back on

Go to the same preferences page on each machine and tick both options again. Machines you added by hand stay in the list.

If discovery still does not work, check the firewall. Cinema 4D, Team Render Server, the Team Render Client, and Bonjour all need to be allowed through in both directions, and UDP ports 5353 and 1900 have to be open.
